VEIN Survival Map Guide: How to Use GPS, Coordinates & Markers

VEIN

How to Display the Map

To display the map in VEIN, you need one of the following items:

  • A map
  • A cell phone

As explained later, the cell phone is highly recommended because it includes multiple functions.

Be careful not to forget to turn the power on.

If you have either item, you can open the map by selecting “Open Map” from your inventory screen.
Additionally, if you equip it into a utility slot, you can open the map instantly using the M key.

Note: When using a cell phone, make sure the device is powered on and the battery is not empty.

How to Display Your Current Position

To display your current position, you need a device that has a GPS feature.
In practice, this means the cell phone.

There are no special operations required—
if you use the cell phone as your map, your current position will automatically be displayed, making it extremely convenient.

The Mobile Phone Is Extremely Useful

The cell phone also provides several useful functions when equipped:

  • Press M to display the map
  • Press F to toggle the flashlight
  • GPS-based current position display (automatic)
  • Compass direction shown on screen (automatic)
  • Current in-game time shown on screen (automatic)

Since all of these features are in one device,
finding a cell phone early on and equipping it makes exploration much easier.

The standalone map does not show your current position—its only real advantage is that it does not require a battery.

The red marker on the map shows your current location and the direction you are facing.

Below are additional map features useful for new players.

Other Map Features

Displaying Discovered Landmarks

Landmarks you have visited in the past are recorded as “discovered.”
Once you obtain a map, all previously visited landmarks will automatically appear on the map.

A landmark refers to notable buildings or structures—such as churches, gas stations, markets, etc.

When you explore a significant area (e.g., a church or gas station), a discovery notification will appear,
and if you have a map, the icon will be added automatically.

The discovery notification appears at the bottom-left of the screen. You can then check its location on the map.

You can also click a landmark icon to see its name and description.
Unless you are playing on higher difficulties, items will respawn, so this helps when revisiting areas.

Placing Markers

You can place a marker anywhere on the map.

How to place a marker:

  • Ctrl + Left Click → choose an icon for the marker

However, due to a system limitation, you cannot place a marker on top of your current position icon (it gets in the way).
Move slightly before placing it.

The game offers 20+ different marker types.

All the orange markers on the map in the example are ones I placed.

You can also add names or notes to markers, which makes them extremely useful for:

  • Tracking temporary objectives
  • Marking places you want to revisit
  • Highlighting areas rich in resources
