Solarpunk Beginner’s Guide | Early Game Progression & Tips

Solarpunk

What is Solarpunk? | Who is it Recommended For?

Solarpunk is a survival crafting game focused on exploring floating islands with an airship, building structures, growing plants, and enjoying a relaxing slow-life experience.

One of the game’s biggest strengths is its building system, featuring a huge variety of decorative parts for players who enjoy detailed construction.

Another unique aspect is the complete lack of combat. Aside from the very beginning, danger is minimal, allowing players to progress at a calm and relaxed pace.

Resource gathering can gradually be automated, creating a satisfying sense of technological progression as the base expands.

The building system also includes smaller decorative parts such as roof overhangs and detailed structural pieces.

Early Game Progression | Until Completing the Airship

The general early-game progression looks like this:

Start → Place Crafting Table → Place Research Table → Unlock Airship Dock Recipe → Build the Airship

Before Placing the Crafting Table

Loot Nearby Chests

Shortly after starting the game, a chests can be found nearby.

These contain food and basic materials, making the early game much smoother if collected immediately.

Basic Crafting with the F Key

Many essential early-game tools can be crafted directly from the F-key crafting menu.

Start by crafting an Axe and Pickaxe to establish a basic working environment.

Once materials become more available, craft a Hoe and Hammer as well, since they will be needed for future base construction.

Build and Place the Survival Guide

One of the craftable items available from the basic crafting menu is the Survival Guide.

Placing it allows access to various tips, tutorials, and gameplay explanations.

It contains useful information about controls, progression, and game mechanics, so it is worth checking early on.

Exploring the Starting Island

The starting island contains naturally growing Berries and Cotton plants.

Harvesting these plants provides 1 seed each.

Since the number of seeds obtained is always one and wild plants do not respawn after harvesting, collecting as many naturally spawned plants as possible is extremely important for early progression.

Make sure to gather every Berry and Cotton plant found on the island.

Higher areas such as cliffs can be reached by building stairs.

Building requires a Hammer to be equipped, so craft one if you have not already done so.

Placing the Crafting Table | Choosing a Base Location

Once basic preparations are complete, place the Crafting Table.

Most future construction and progression will happen around this area, so choosing a good location is important.

A large flat area near water is highly recommended.

Being close to water makes farming and refilling water containers significantly easier.

Flat terrain is also preferable because many structures and planted objects cannot be placed properly on steep slopes.

Trees can be replanted elsewhere after chopping them down, since saplings are obtained during harvesting.

If trees are blocking future construction plans, simply remove them with an axe.

Until Completing the Airship

Placing the Research Table

The Crafting Table unlocks many more crafting options compared to the basic F-key crafting menu.

The most important structure is the Research Table.

The Research Table allows new crafting recipes to be unlocked in exchange for items and resources.

Unlocking new recipes through research becomes the primary gameplay objective moving forward.

Building Beehives

After unlocking the recipe through the Research Table, begin placing Beehives.

Beehives generate Beeswax over time.

Placement location does not matter much. While steep terrain and nearby Beehives may block placement, the Beehive will function normally anywhere it can be placed.

Beeswax becomes heavily required for future recipe unlocks, so building at least three Beehives early is recommended.

Remember to collect Beeswax regularly.

Unlocking Tier 2 Recipes | Building the Furnace

Unlocking Tier 2 research adds new recipes to the Research Table.

One of the most important unlocks is the Furnace.

The Furnace is required to process minerals into useful crafting materials, making it a high priority unlock.

Gathering Mineral Resources

Four different mineral resources can be gathered on the starting island.

These resources become usable materials after being refined in the Furnace.

Glass and Iron in particular are used frequently, so collecting large quantities early is recommended.

  • Stone
  • Sand → Glass
  • Clay → Bricks
  • Iron Ore → Iron

Each material comes from its corresponding resource node.

Clay is also obtained while gathering Stone and Sand.

Iron Ore can be gathered continuously from non-depleting ore veins.

Building the Airship

As research progresses and the base expands, the Tier 3 recipe for the Airship Dock eventually becomes available.

Building the Airship requires Airship Parts.

If these parts have not already been discovered during exploration, they will need to be searched for manually.

Look for smoke rising from crashed airships.

Crash sites are located on cliffs, meaning stairs are often required to reach them.

After Completing the Airship

After completing the Airship, it becomes possible to travel to:

  • A new island
  • An airship containing NPCs

The new island contains new resources such as Copper.

The NPC airship allows additional recipe unlocks, including electricity-related technology.

From this point onward, the main gameplay loop revolves around progressing through:

  • Recipe unlocks at the Research Table
  • Recipe unlocks from the NPC airship

while gradually expanding available technology and equipment.

Securing Food and Water

Farming Berries and Cotton

Wild Berry plants do not respawn after being harvested.

Because of this, farming becomes the primary long-term food source.

After crafting a Hoe and tilling the soil, seeds can be planted directly into farmland.

A Watering Can can be crafted at the Crafting Table.

Equip it and right-click near water to refill it.

If food or hydration becomes too low, sprinting will no longer be possible.

Early-game shortages are common, so keep farmland watered consistently to maintain stable crop production.

Cotton is also required for future crafting recipes and research unlocks, so make sure to grow it as well.

Securing Drinking Water

Hydration can also be restored by eating Berries. However, Berries alone eventually become insufficient, making a stable source of drinking water necessary.

Pond water is dirty and cannot be consumed directly, so drinking water must be obtained using one of the following methods:

  • Collect rainwater with a Rain Collector (safe to drink immediately)
  • Boil dirty water collected from ponds using a Furnace

Rain Collectors only generate water while it is raining, meaning water shortages can still occur when needed.

Because of this, building multiple Rain Collectors is recommended.

If rainwater runs out, pond water must be boiled before it becomes drinkable.

Boiling water requires Bottles. Unlock the Bottle recipe through the Research Table and craft them using Glass.

After filling Bottles with water from ponds or wells, heat them in the Furnace to create clean drinking water.

A Well can also be crafted at the Crafting Table. However, water from Wells functions the same as pond water and cannot be consumed directly.

Wells are mainly useful when the base is located far away from natural water sources, so avoid building one expecting a direct source of clean drinking water.

Useful Tips

Inventory Management | Quick Stack and Item Transfer

Moving Items Between Inventories

Items can be transferred quickly between inventories using Shift + Click.

This allows fast item movement such as:

  • Chest → Inventory
  • Inventory → Chest

This is a frequently used shortcut worth remembering.

Quick Stack

The arrow button located in the bottom-right corner of the inventory can be used to quickly store items into nearby chests.

This function only transfers items if the same item already exists inside the chest.

For example, if Stone, Wood, and Berries are stored in separate chests, Quick Stack can automatically sort and store matching items into the correct containers.

Sprinkler Range

I tested how much farmland a single Sprinkler can cover.

In a 4×4 layout with 16 farm plots, the corner plots did not receive water.

After reducing both outer rows from 4 plots to 3 plots and lowering the total to 14 farm plots, the Sprinkler was barely able to cover the entire area.

However, the placement is fairly strict.

It is easier to first place the four center farm plots and then place the Sprinkler afterward.

If the Sprinkler is placed first, it can interfere with farmland placement and prevent the layout from fitting properly.

Copper and Silicon Locations

Copper can be obtained shortly after completing the Airship by gathering Copper Ore from the newly accessible floating island.

To obtain Silicon, the Airship must first be upgraded to Level 2.

Quartz found in the areas accessible with the Level 2 Airship can be refined in a Furnace to produce Silicon.

For detailed locations, refer to the map below.
