About This Page

This page introduces recommended ways to level each skill, divided into the following two categories.

Fastest Way to Level

  • The recommended method if your only goal is to raise that specific skill as quickly as possible.

Efficient Way to Level

  • The recommended method if you want to level other skills at the same time, or gather items that are important for overall game progression.

As a premise, these recommendations also consider the effort required to gather resources needed for leveling. So if you already have abundant resources, some methods shown here may not be the absolute fastest or most efficient for your situation.

Especially for skills leveled through building or crafting, if you have plenty of materials, you can often gain XP faster by doing higher-tier construction or crafting than what this guide recommends. Choose methods that fit your current circumstances.

Note: The content of this guide is based on data verified through actual gameplay. If there are gaps or errors due to differences in testing conditions or game version changes, this guide will be updated accordingly.

Basic Principles of Leveling

About XP Triggers

In VEIN, skill XP is gained when you meet specific conditions (triggers). There are two types of XP triggers:

  • Instant triggers: XP is gained at the moment the condition is met.
  • Continuous triggers: XP is gained while you maintain a certain state.

Instant triggers show an XP notification on the right side of the screen when they occur, but continuous triggers do not display any notification.

Each skill has its own set of triggers. Some skills have only one trigger, while others have multiple triggers.

Skills with instant triggers tend to grant relatively large amounts of XP per action, so they are often easier to level. Continuous triggers usually grant smaller XP amounts, so skills that rely only on continuous triggers are generally harder to level.

Items That Provide an XP Boost

Some books and certain cooked foods temporarily double the amount of skill XP you gain. These are not mentioned in each skill section, but you should definitely use them when leveling.

Some XP-boosting foods are easy to gather ingredients for, so it’s recommended to check what you can cook at stoves or other cooking stations before you start grinding.

Note: Using multiple XP-boost items does not stack the effect.

Special Ways to Gain Skill XP

Some instant triggers include special XP gain methods such as:

  • Using a “Skill Book” that directly increases a specific skill level.
  • Bonus XP gained when discovering landmarks.
  • XP gained from using certain items tied to specific skill effects.

These methods are not practical as consistent leveling tools, so they are only supplementary and won’t be the main path for efficient leveling. Since this guide focuses on repeatable, reliable methods, details are omitted.

Leveling Methods for All 20 Skills (2 Not Implemented Yet)

Agility

Skill Characteristics

  • This skill has no instant triggers and increases only through continuous triggers.
  • It’s hard to level intentionally, but it naturally rises just by walking or running.
  • Although “Agility” sounds like speed, in the current version it mainly relates to stamina (endurance).

Fastest Way to Level

  • Reduce your carried weight and remove any gear that slows you down, then keep running nonstop.
    • XP gain is up to 600 XP per minute (baseline).
    • If your movement speed drops, XP gain decreases proportionally.

Note: The baseline ~600 XP/min is measured at zero weight with no equipment. Even if you move faster than this state, XP gain does not increase further.

Efficient Way to Level

  • During waiting time (such as while crafting), perform Jumping Jacks (Exercise) and idle.

Note: If you leave it too long, it will auto-stop due to “Pain,” so it cannot be fully AFK.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • None.
Continuous Triggers
  • Walking / Running: up to 600 XP/min.
  • Jumping Jacks: about 480 XP/min.

Construction

Skill Characteristics

  • An easy skill to level through building actions and crafting building materials.
  • Many facilities require certain Construction levels, so leveling early is highly beneficial.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Build large numbers of Utility Cabinets, then dismantle them.
    • Only requires Wood Scrap, which is easy to obtain.
    • If you also craft Wooden Logs into Wooden Rods / Wooden Planks at nearby workbenches, leveling becomes even faster.

Efficient Way to Level

  • If you want to level Strength and Crafting too, mass-produce Wooden Planks and Wooden Rods at workbenches.
    • Set up multiple workbenches and craft in parallel to improve time efficiency.
    • If you want to level Dismantling and Crafting together, the Fence Ledge build → dismantle loop is excellent.
    • Dismantling leaves debris, but it disappears after some time.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Completing a build.
  • Crafting building materials (Wooden Planks, Wooden Rods, Metal Brackets, etc.).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Cooking

Skill Characteristics

  • Cooking relies mostly on instant triggers, but cooking times are long and XP per action is not very high.
  • So simply cooking for survival does not raise this skill quickly.

Foods That Grant an XP Boost

  • Vegetable Fat
    • Can be made at a cooking station using: 3 Fresh Vegetables + Water + Pot.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Continuously craft Boiled Water at a cooking station.
    • Many recipes require manual pickup at proper completion timing, but Boiled Water auto-collects after 5 seconds.
    • You can queue multiple crafts and AFK while it runs.
    • A pot or frying pan (cooking tool) is required.
    • Having a large-capacity bottle helps supply water faster.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • Before starting, queue large amounts of crafting at nearby workbenches to level other skills in parallel.
    • If you want to level Medical and Crafting, make Improvised Bandages from the I-key crafting menu.
    • Craft-related skills (Crafting, Construction, Mechanical, etc.) can be leveled simultaneously.
    • Cooking requires constant fuel/water supply, so tasks needing frequent interaction are hard to do at the same time.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Completing a cooking recipe (includes cooking-station crafts and vegetable slicing from the I-key crafting menu).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Crafting

Skill Characteristics

  • A skill that increases through instant triggers.
  • Almost all crafting done at workbenches or via the I-key crafting menu grants XP, so it levels easily.
  • The XP amount varies depending on the item crafted.
  • Some crafts also grant XP to other skills such as Construction, Electrical, or Mechanical.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Mass-produce easy, fast intermediate materials such as Wooden Planks, Wooden Rods, or Metal Brackets.
    • Place multiple workbenches and craft in parallel to maximize throughput.

Note: If you move too far away from a workbench, you won’t get XP.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Change what you craft depending on which other skills you want to raise:
    • For Construction → Wooden Planks / Wooden Rods.
    • For Mechanical → Metal Brackets.
    • For Medical → Improvised Bandages.
  • If you have time, build nearby objects like Fence Ledges while crafting to further improve efficiency. You can also increase Strength by hitting a wall, or boost Agility by doing Jumping Jacks.

Supplement

  • You can also raise Electrical and Repair through crafting, but it’s inefficient:
  • Electrical → materials are scarce, and Hotwiring is much faster.
  • Repair → Wooden Spears are easy to craft but take 30 seconds each. Repair can be leveled easily at a Repair Workbench.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Completing a craft at a workbench.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Dismantling

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • XP is granted when dismantling furniture, objects, or buildings.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Two main candidates:
    • Fence Ledge build → dismantle loop.
      • Fast rotation and low material cost, so efficiency is extremely high.
    • Mass-produce Wooden Planks / Wooden Rods / Improvised Bandages → dismantle full stacks.
      • With large stacks, a single dismantle can exceed 3000 XP.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest methods.
    • For Dismantling focus → build/dismantle loop.
    • For Medical focus → craft Improvised Bandages, then dismantle stacks.
    • For Crafting focus → craft Wooden Planks, then dismantle stacks.
    • If you process Planks into Rods, Crafting XP increases more, but Dismantling XP from dismantle does not increase.
    • Choose based on whether you want to grow Crafting more or Dismantling more.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Dismantling objects or items.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Driving

Skill Characteristics

  • No instant triggers; increases only through continuous triggers.
  • XP is gained only while you are driving a vehicle.
  • In the current version, leveling this skill provides little benefit.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Keep driving continuously.
    • No faster shortcut was found. Confirmed points:
      • Driving speed does not affect XP gain.
      • Road kills grant no XP.
      • XP only counts while the car is moving. Holding acceleration into a wall does not work.
      • Not tested, but circling in an open area might allow semi-AFK leveling.

Efficient Way to Level

  • You can level Strength, Medical, and Crafting while driving.
    • Hit your car with melee attacks during driving to gain Strength XP. Depending on vehicle height, you may need to look downward to reach it. Excessive hits can break the car.
    • Craft Improvised Bandages from the I-key menu while driving to raise Medical and Crafting simultaneously.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • None.
Continuous Triggers
  • While driving a vehicle, small XP is gained continuously (speed does not matter).

Electrical

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Crafting electrical components grants XP, but materials are scarce and the efficiency is poor.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Repeatedly perform Hotwire on cars.
    • Both success and failure grant XP. Success gives especially large XP, so this method has the best rotation speed.
    • Target used-car lots or public parking areas where many cars are lined up.
A used-car dealership exists west of Sarnac (marked with a star).

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • If you craft Improvised Bandages from the I-key menu while hotwiring, you can also level Medical and Crafting.
    • Some gloves provide electrical resistance and can nullify hotwire failure damage, but removing them is better because taking damage gives a tiny amount of Vitality XP.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Hotwiring (success or failure).
  • Crafting electrical items.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Farming

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Perk effects are modest.
  • Required to craft Medium Planters (Lv15) and Large Planters (Lv35).

Fastest Way to Level

  • Place lots of planters and rapidly harvest grown crops.
    • You gain XP when harvesting. Early game, you can harvest already-grown crops found in the world.
    • Speed up your leveling While waiting for your crops to grow, you can further maximize your XP gain by repeatedly building and dismantling planters (or other farming structures).
    • Seeds can be found in Trash Bins, Gardens, Barns, etc.
    • You can also use abandoned planters instead of building new ones.
    • You can “move” planters onto a car to transport them, but they may break if you crash.

Important Note on Crop Growth:Crops require actual playtime to grow. Their progress is NOT based on in-game time. Sleeping to skip time will NOT advance the growth of your plants. You have to stay active in the game.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • Normal farming for food provides plenty of XP, so unless you need levels urgently, just farm naturally.

Note: You could level Construction and Dismantling by building/dismantling planters, but harvest XP is so high that this is not recommended for efficiency.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Harvesting crops.
  • Some builds (planters, compost boxes, etc.).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Lockpicking

Skill Characteristics

  • Some high-difficulty locks cannot even be attempted unless you meet a level requirement, so this is a must-pick at character creation.
  • Lv25 lets you attempt most locks, but some locks require Lv75 (confirmed).

Fastest Way to Level

  • Install a door yourself, lock it, then pick it repeatedly.
    • Setup: place only a door on flat ground → attach a lock → throw away the key.
    • Lock it → pick from the opposite side → repeat.
    • If there is a double-door location, you can do the same without building your own door, but devs have stated they will fix this, so it may no longer work later.
    • Failed picks consume lockpicks, so stock up heavily. Lockpicks are often found in offices.
    • Crafting lockpicks requires Scissors, so gather them regularly.
    • If you choose the “Thief” starting profession, you begin with the lockpick blueprint, making leveling easier.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Loot locked furniture/containers in residential areas near your base while also picking up lockpicks as you go.
  • Repeat car lockpick → hotwire to also level Electrical.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Successfully unlocking a lock.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Mechanical

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Increases via crafting metal items such as Metal Brackets.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Craft Metal Brackets continuously while also building Doors in parallel.
    • Set up multiple workbenches to craft simultaneously for better time efficiency.
    • Iron Scrap is obtained by dismantling metal objects. For mass collection, factories or caves are good spots.
    • Door construction requires Metal Brackets as materials.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method. Adjust tasks depending on what else you want to level.
    • For Construction/Crafting/Dismantling → build and dismantle Doors.
    • For Strength → hit walls with a high-DPS weapon.
    • For Medical/Crafting → produce Improvised Bandages.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Crafting Mechanical items (e.g., Metal Brackets).
  • Some builds that use Metal Brackets.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Medical

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Increases through wound treatment and crafting medical items.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Self-injury → apply bandage → remove → reapply repeatedly.
    • Break a window, then walk back and forth near the jagged frame to gain the “Wounded” state.
    • Bandages can be applied/removed in the Medical tab of the I-key menu.
You can apply or remove bandages from this Medical menu.

Note: Infection risk from self-injury hasn’t been fully tested. It is likely safe, but not guaranteed. If worried, disinfect and stitch wounds before repeating.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Mass-produce Improvised Bandages.
  • These can be crafted without a workbench, so you can do it alongside any activity.
  • Once stacked, dismantle them to gain Dismantling XP too.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Treating wounds.
  • Crafting medical items.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Repair

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Increases by repairing weapons/armor/tools at a Repair Workbench.
  • Higher level increases repair efficiency (durability restored per repair).
  • The perk “Reduce weapon/armor degradation by 25%” is very strong.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Repair lots of cloth/leather clothing at a Repair Workbench.
    • Building a Repair Workbench requires Construction Lv40.
    • Stockpile damaged clothing from zombies to level fast in one go.
    • Gather Cloth Scraps, Leather Strips, and Denim Scraps beforehand.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • You can also gain XP by crafting Wooden Spears, but crafting is slow, so not recommended.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Repairing items at a Repair Workbench.
  • Crafting certain weapons (e.g., Wooden Spears).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Scavenging

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • You gain XP the moment you take items from containers such as furniture or storage boxes.
  • An internal cooldown exists, so repeatedly looting containers does not always grant XP, making it extremely hard to level.
  • Perks are strong: they can remove the container search delay entirely.

Fastest Way to Level

TL;DR: The Meta Strategy

Use “Take All” (Default: H) on containers with high “Slot Counts.”

The Efficiency Loop:

  1. Loot a container using “Take All.”
  2. A 30-second cooldown begins.
  3. During this wait, move to the next container. Deconstruct and Split items inside it to inflate the slot count.
  4. Once the 30s is up, “Take All” from that prepped container.

The Mechanics: How it works

Here is the breakdown of why this strategy works.

  • The Trigger: XP is gained the moment an item moves from container to inventory.
  • The Cooldown: XP gain has a hard ~30-second cooldown after activation.
  • The Formula:
    • Single item loot: 12–50 XP (Random).
    • “Take All” loot: [ Number of Slots Moved ] × [ 12–50 XP ].
  • Anti-Cheese: Placing items into a container disables XP for that container completely.
  • The Trick: You can artificially increase the “Slot Count” (and thus your XP) by Deconstructing items or Splitting stacks inside the container before looting.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Manage your “XP Trigger” wisely. If a container has few items (low XP potential), loot it during the cooldown period. Do not waste a valid XP chance on small yields. Instead, sacrifice the small XP to keep gathering resources, and save the XP activation for containers with high slot counts.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Looting containers such as furniture/storage (internal cooldown applies).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Sneaking

Skill Characteristics

  • XP is gained only through continuous triggers.
  • You gain XP only while crouch-walking.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Crouch-walk nonstop with zero weight and light gear.
    • Baseline is about 440 XP/min, and XP decreases as movement speed drops.

Note: Walking into a wall does not grant XP.

Note: The baseline ~440 XP/min is measured at zero weight with no equipment, and XP does not increase even if you move faster than that.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • For Strength → hit the ground while crouch-walking.
    • For Crafting/Medical → make Improvised Bandages while crouch-walking.
    • If leveling alongside workbench methods, don’t stray too far from the benches.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • None.
Continuous Triggers
  • Crouch-walking (about 440 XP/min, strongly affected by speed modifiers).

Strength

Skill Characteristics

  • Has both instant and continuous triggers.
  • Continuous-trigger XP is small.
  • A core skill that directly affects comfort: increases melee power and max carry weight.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Hit a wall repeatedly with a high-DPS melee weapon.
    • Higher weapon damage increases XP per hit.
    • The fastest method is using a weapon with good damage and speed (high DPS).
    • Recommended weapon type: axes (Wood Axe DPS 30, Fire Axe DPS 31).

Efficient Way to Level

  • Chop trees using an axe.
    • Gains Strength XP while also gathering Wooden Logs, so it’s very efficient.
    • You can also craft Improvised Bandages simultaneously to level Crafting and Medical.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Melee attacks hitting something (walls, trees, zombies, etc.).
  • Moving objects (XP granted when placing after moving).
Continuous Triggers
  • Walking while Very Encumbered (about 85 XP/min).
  • Speed, absolute weight, and ratio do not affect this value.
  • Even if UI shows “70%,” you may not be past the true threshold; add a little more weight if needed.

Throwing

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • XP is gained at the moment you throw an item (not on impact).

Fastest Way to Level

  • Throw items repeatedly at a wall.
    • Throw → target the item → choose “Equip” → throw again.
    • Larger items are easier to retarget and equip; small items like darts are hard to pick up and not recommended.

Efficient Way to Level

  • No special method. Best done alongside other crafting activities.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Throwing throwable items.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Vitality

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Perks increase max HP, fall resistance, and status resistances, making this a key survival skill.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Repeatedly move objects.
    • Move → place → move → place in rapid cycles.
    • Doing it near a wall makes targeting and placement faster.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.
    • Best leveled in parallel with workbench/crafting loops.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Taking damage (very small XP).
  • Moving objects (XP when a placed object’s position is changed).
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Weapon Handling

Skill Characteristics

  • Levels only through instant triggers.
  • Governs gun operation. Perks increase reload speed and related effects.

Fastest Way to Level

  • Fire guns repeatedly.
    • You gain XP when firing even if you miss zombies.
    • Headshots grant about double XP.

Efficient Way to Level

  • Same as the fastest method.

XP Triggers (Instant / Continuous)

Instant Triggers
  • Firing a gun (bows are not included). Hits are not required.
Continuous Triggers
  • None.

Trading

Skill Characteristics

  • Not implemented. Provides no effects in the current version.

XP Triggers

  • Unknown (not implemented).

Sociability

Skill Characteristics

  • Not implemented. No in-game effects have been confirmed.
  • You can gain XP, but it currently has no use.

XP Triggers
